Roulette Guide: Wheels, Bets and Real Probabilities

Roulette is easier to evaluate once you count the pockets. A European wheel has numbers 1–36 plus one zero; an American wheel adds 00. Both usually offer the same advertised payouts, so the extra pocket is what raises the house edge.

Wheel type changes the probability behind every roulette wager, even when the payout label stays the same.

Choose the wheel first

Single-zero European roulette generally returns more to the player than double-zero American roulette. French “la partage” or “en prison” rules may further reduce the edge on even-money bets. You can also review the live casino guide before choosing a platform or game.

Know inside and outside bets

Inside bets cover fewer numbers and pay more when they hit. Outside bets cover larger groups and win more often, but the standard house edge remains the same on a European wheel.

Treat spins independently

A sequence of red results does not make black “due.” On a fair wheel, the next spin follows the same pocket probabilities regardless of the previous history panel. For additional context, continue with the baccarat probability guide.

Roulette questions

Are outside bets mathematically better than straight-up bets?

On standard European roulette they carry the same 2.70% house edge. Outside bets simply trade a smaller payout for a higher chance of winning each spin.

Why is double-zero roulette more expensive to play?

Most payouts stay unchanged while the wheel gains an extra losing pocket. That raises the house edge on most American roulette wagers to 5.26%. Eligible adults who choose to continue can register through our sponsored partner after reviewing the current terms.

Roulette Betting Systems Explained

Martingale System

Double your even-money bet after every loss to recover previous losses upon a single win. Requires strong bankroll management.

Fibonacci System

Follow the mathematical sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8...) after losses. It increases stakes more slowly than Martingale, but it does not change the house edge or guarantee recovery.
